How Humidifiers Improve Indoor Air This Winter | Fresno Furnace Repair Service

Indoor air quality can change drastically when there is a change in temperature. This is especially true during winter when cold air holds less moisture than warm air that is because indoor and outdoor humidity levels decline during the winter months. One can easily brush this off until you start having drier hair and skin or a sore throat whenever your furnace is turned on. You may think a Fresno furnace repair service may be necessary to help prevent these health concerns from getting worse.

Fortunately, low humidity can be remedied by installing a humidifier.

How Humidifiers Help

heating maintenanceHumidifiers are devices meant to add moisture to the air Medical News Today explains in a post that:

Dry air can cause moisture to evaporate from the skin and respiratory symptoms to worsen over time. Adding moisture to the air with a humidifier can counteract these problems. Humidifiers can help people who experience:

1. dry skin
2. irritated eyes
3. dryness in the throat or airways
4. allergies
5. frequent coughs
6. bloody noses
7. sinus headaches
8. cracked lips

And while most humidifiers have the same basic function, there are different types to choose from. Visit http://aamarthedal.com for more information about humidifiers ideal for the summer season.

How Humidifiers Work with Furnace Service

As you take interest in installing one in your home, you must first determine which one will best fit your need. There are portable units you strategically place in key areas in your home. But sometimes, portable units may not suffice, especially when you live in a spacious house. This is where whole house furnace mounted central humidifiers come into the picture.

There are two most common types installed in homes: Flow-Through and Drum type.

The Flow-Through Type

This type of humidifier turns on automatically when humidity falls below the level set on the humidistat. The warm air that comes from the furnace will pass through its evaporator pad and at the same time water moistens the pad. The moisture is then absorbed by the warm air to create a humidified air which will now pass through the ductwork and circulate into the house.

Maintenance: Unit cleaning and replacement of an evaporator pad is generally done once a year.

Advantage: Requires less and low cost maintenance

Drum Type

Drum type also comes with a humidistat and turns on automatically when the humidity drops below the determined level. It is built with a rotating evaporator pad that spins in the water pan inside the unit, adding water into the passing warm air to give it moisture. The humidified air goes through the ducts and out into your living space.

Maintenance: Since it’s prone to mold and bacteria buildup, it requires cleaning once every few months (or once a month).

Advantage: Costly and more frequent maintenance requirement
