The Best Roofing Type for Solar Panels Installation

The Best Roofing Type for Solar Panels Installation

The use of solar power to help reduce utility bills has procured a huge number of interested property owners, especially in California. The shift towards green energy has prompted the state to become “the first state in the nation to make solar mandatory for new houses. Beginning in 2020, newly constructed homes must have solar panels.” This report from Trent Gillies of CNBC also states that “will increase the average monthly mortgage payment by $40, but new homeowners will save an average of $80 a month on their heating, cooling and lighting bills.”

With this mandate, solar panel systems will become a basic part of real estate construction. And this news promises a lot, especially for families who support environmentally-friendly alternatives to sustain power demands.

What Type of Roofing Do You Have?

solar rackWhile installers from qualified solar panel installation companies can lodge photovoltaic panels almost on any roof type, some roofs are positioned to generate less energy when solar panels are installed. South and west-facing side roofs technically collect more sun energy than those facing east and north. Although this factor contributes a lot to how much a set of panels can harness in a day, we can’t change it’s position because it is part of a permanent structure. One will have to tear down the structure then rebuild the house to adjust to this setting.

It is impractical and completely invalid. The next best option is to know which type of roofing is in place.

Here are the different types of real estate roofing.

  • Metal – It is the most compatible type since they last longer and can outlive the panels. While it is eco-friendly and durable, it’s also ideal for those who are tight on budget.
  • Tile – Because tiles are made of different materials, installers will use brackets bolted under or below the tiles to lift the panel system. And tiles come in different variations; Concrete, Ceramic, Stone, and Composite to name a few.
  • Wood – There is a high chance that the installers will use shingles to install the panels on roofs made of wood and position at the right angle. This is the least compatible type of roofing, but installations can still be done.
  • Tar and Gravel – This old method of roofing requires braces and additional materials for the panel installation to succeed. This type is made with asphalt or tar and some supporting materials put on top of each other to create the desired layer and thickness. Maintenance may become a difficult task.
  • Torch Down Roofs – This type is best for low-angle and flat roofs and well-suited for solar panel mounting. It’s a bit pricey compared to the other types but it has been proven to withstand harsh weather conditions and its durability is unquestionable.
  • Foam – Lightweight, seamless, and surprisingly durable which make it easy to install. On the plus side, it is energy efficient and effective in preventing heat loss and blocks moisture build-up.
